Towering over the tops of the fragrant pine trees on the east side of Deadwood Gulch, is Mt. Moriah. The cemetery on the top of the hill is the permanent home to some of the greatest legends the Old West ever knew.

Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Potato Creek Johnny, Preacher Smith and Dora DuFran all rest there. The climb up from Sherman Street below can be treacherous in larger vehicles but the 100+ year-old Victorian homes lining the street are testament to the fact that the hill is not impassable.

Mt. Moriah was recently restored, brick walls and roadways are reinforced and the graves of the famous are cleaned up and ready for visitors once more. The platform on the edge of the cliff gives visitors a spectacular view of Deadwood’s Main Street.

Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane rest at Mt. Moriah Cemetery high above Deadwood.
